MP3

In an attempt to provide those far and away with a true sonic document of what the High Mayhem Festival offers our audience in Santa Fe, NM, we decided to include a CD-ROM with set-length MP3’s. Due to limitations in format, we had to trim the nearly 20 hours of audio we had, down to about 11 hours. We tried to be systematic and fair in how we cut and trimmed the audio, in order to give both the listeners and artists alike, a thorough document as possible.

Whenever we could, we included entire performances. Even in these cases, we had to minimize the file size by removing applause, talking, and pauses. In some situations this changed the effect of the original performance altogether. Ironically, the "Out of Context" is a good example of this; the MP3 gives the illusion that this was one continuous, uninterrupted set, when in fact it was many distinct pieces with beginnings and endings.

We were forced to place a cap on performances over 30 minutes, but didn't simply just clip the latter part of the set. The MP3’s help to provide the listener with additional audio not already on the audio discs, so we first cut audio that already played on the audio CD’s. In many other cases, we had to further edit down the audio and cut in appropriate places to provide complete “songs” or movements.

The only omission on the CD-ROM is Zimbabwe Nkenya’s Duo set. Zimbabwe performed a set consisting mainly of interpretations of “jazz standards” as he paid homage to Thelonious Monk’s birthday, which coincided with the Festival. Monk’s music is copyrighted by Thelonious Music Corp., administered by Second Floor Music (which claims royalties) and so we left it off, on purely monetary grounds. But it does bring up the issue of “fair-use”, which we will not go into here.

So here it is. Eleven-plus hours of audio from High Mayhem Festival 2004. We hope this gives you all a better understanding of the sonic scope of our festival and the range of remarkable talent that exists here in New Mexico and afar.

Thanks for checking out this release and please, pass it on!
